Fremantle Roosters coach Duane Butler said his side’s first half performance was the key to their 44-22 Fuel to Go and Play Premiership win over the Rockingham Sharks at Port Kennedy, after the Sharks saw skipper Chris Siddons sent off by referee Byron Devene.
The Roosters took advantage of the extra man to take a commanding 32-6 lead at the break, but Butler said they then took their foot off the pedal and allowed their opponents to give the game some respectability.
“We had a good first half - set us up for the game, but we got complacent in the second half and dropped a lot of ball and Rockingham won the second half 16-12,” Butler said.
“They had a lot more heart in that second half and we need to sort that out on the training field. It’s a mental thing.”
Captain Ezra Taimoa led from the front with a hat-trick, although it was Rockingham who scored first on their first set of the game, off the back of two penalties as hooker Derek Chizuni dived over under the posts.
But from that point on, it was all Fremantle. Nick Riggs and Eli Beattie quickly gave the visitors the lead after some sloppy defence and they never looked back.
“I’m very happy with the 44 points, but we should have taken the game further and that’s something we need to rectify at training,” Butler added.
“We should have controlled the game better and it ended being played on their terms and they had 12 men.”
Back rower Trent Griffin added two more as Rockingham staged a late rally with tries from Crockett Henry, Keiron Lawton and David Quinlin to give the scoreline some respectability, but it wasn’t enough to satisfy coach Pete Worth.
“I asked for a response at halftime and they gave it to me. More effort and accountability, but it was always going to be tough to turn it around,” he said.
Worth added there were some good individual player efforts but “not enough”.
“The buy-in at the back end of the game was good to see, but there’s a lot of work to be done still.”
